Naruto gains the whiskers because the kyuubi kitsune no oni was sealed into him mere hours after he was born. I think it'd be cool if those were a clan afectation, but they aren't.
POI, how far are yo in the manga? around issue 50 in shippuden jariya explains that the kybi was split in two with the (large by our recconing) kitsune portion was sealed directly to naruto's soul and the eternally more massive demon part was placed within the seal itself. the directly boded portion gives him his whiskers, massive natural chakra and x-men wolverine-ish healing factor.
